about taylor swift

taylor alison swift was born on december 13th, 1989 in west reading, pennsylvania. she was named after james taylor whom taylor's parents were big fans of. her mum also though that giving her a gender-neural name would help taylors business career. she spent her early years on a christmas tree farm and she spent her summers at her family's vacation home in stone harbor, new jersey, where she often performed acoustic songs at a local coffee shop. she wasn't the first musically gifted person in the family, as her grandmother marjorie was a professional opera singer. growing up taylor was a big fan of faith hill, shinia twain and the dixie chicks. after watching a documentary about faith hill, she became determined to pursue a country music career in nashville. at 11, taylor traveled to nashville to visit record labels and submit demo tapes of dolly parton and dixie chicks karaoke covers, but was unfortunetly rejected by all the labels. her first appearance in front of a large crowd was when she was 11 and sang the star-spangled banner before a philadelphia 76ers basketball game. when she was 12, she saw a 12-string guitar - twice the amount of strings on a regular guitar. she asked her parents if she could have one and they refused, saying that her fingers were too small and she'll have to wait until shes older. taylor rebeled and started playing the 12-string guitar 4 hours a day - 6 on weekends. she would get calluses on her fingers that would crack and bleed, but taylor just taped them up and kept on playing. it was the 2002 US open championships where she caught the eye of music manager dan dymtrow, who worked with artists such as britney spears, he saw similar potential in taylor and agreed to work with her. with dans help taylor managed to model for abercrombie & fitch and had an original song included on a maybelline compilation CD. after performing original songs at an RCA records showcase, 13 year old taylor was given an artist development deal and began to travel regularly to nashville with her mother. at 14 the swift family moved to hendersonville, about 15 miles outside nashville city center. while there she got the chance to work with established nashville songwriters on the famous music row such as troy verges, brett beavers, brett james, mac mcanally and the warren brothers. they began meeting for 2 hour writing sessions every tuesday afternoon after school. in may 2005 taylor was approached by sony/ATV tree music publishing for the opportunity to write for other artists. she already felt constrained by the RCA deal, which she felt was keeping her in the "development stage" for too long and didn't take the opportunity to renew it, deciding instead to accept sony's offer and became the youngest artist signed by sony at the age of 15. at an industry showcase taylor caught the attention of scott borchetta, a dreamworks records executive who was preparing to form an independent record label, big machine records. she was one of big machine's first signings. taylor then began working on her debut album with nathan chapman.

"i'm only letting my record company make a small amount of these. the last thing i want any of you to think is that we are putting out too many releases." she said.

taylor's 2nd studio album, released november 11, 2008 in the US and canada and elsewhere on march 9, 2009. she wrote most of the songs while touring in 2007-2008. the album was inspired by her teenage feelings, the lyrics exploring love and heartbreak using fairy tale-like motifs. 5 songs were released as singles, "love story", "white horse", "you belong with me", "fifteen" and the title track, "fearless". 2 of them, "love story" and "you belong with me", were commercially successful and set records on both country and pop radio. the album spent 11 weeks atop the billboard 200 in the US after debuting at number 1, was certified diamond by the recording industry association of america and received multi-platinum certifications in australia, canada, new zealand and the UK. fearless is also the most awarded album in the history of country music, winning album of the year at the 52nd annual grammy awards, the american music awards of 2009, the country music association awards and the academy of country music awards. taylor became the youngest artist in the history of the grammy awards to win the award at the age of 20.

a pivotal and infamous moment in her career was at the 2009 music awards. taylor had just won best female video for "you belong with me" and during her acceptance speech, kanye west interrupted, taking the mircophone from her and saying "yo taylor, i'm really happy for you. i'mma let you finish. but beyonce had one of the best videos of all time !". taylor and andrea were reportedly found crying backstage afterwards and kanye was later shamed into apologising. the incident made headlines and even president barack obama got involved, calling kanye a "jackass".

1989 is taylors 5th studio album, and was released on october 27, 2014. the album title was named after taylor's birth year as a symbolic rebirth. there were 7 singles; "shake it off", "blank space", "bad blood", "style", "wildest dreams", "out of the woods" and "new romantics". the first five charted in the top 10 of the billboard hot 100. 1989 spent 11 weeks atop the billboard 200 and was certified nine-times platinum. the album has sold 14 million copies worldwide and received platinum certifications in many countries across europe, the americas, and asia-pacific. 1989 won album of the year and best pop vocal album at the 2016 grammy awards. while taylor had dapped in pop music for awhile, this time taylor wanted to reinvent herself completely as a mainstream pop star. after her previous album, "red" didn't win best album, taylor was devastated and worked hard to make an even better record. this was the era where digital streaming services were taking over physical album sales. taylor believed that music is art, and should be paid for. taylor refused to let 1989 be available on spotify saying that the service was damaging songwriters' royalties systems. she also withdrew her entire discography from spotify. taylor also withdrew 1989 from apple music persuading them to change their policy to pay artists better.
